The Physical Plant Certification
Program is a mandatory orientation for employees of the UCF Physical Plant. It
consists of several training elements: Physical Plant Basic Certification
Program: For all employees, the basic program covers an introduction to the
Physical Plant operations, attitude and customer service, communication skills,
sexual harassment and cultural diversity, and several areas of required safety
training. Participants must qualify for certification by answering questions on
each area within their first six months of employment, or within six months of
attending the six- to seven-hour training session, whichever is later. Refresher
Training: Approximately 12 months after attending the Basic Certification
Program, and annually thereafter, all Physical Plant employees attend Refresher
Training to enhance their retention and update their knowledge of Basic Certification
topics. Included are safety issues, communication, sexual harassment and cultural
diversity, and a variety of current concerns such as teamwork, stress management,
time management, etc. A revised program is offered each calendar year.
Groundskeeping Certification Program: For groundskeeping employees, this
program covers the basics of job-specific skills and knowledge, including such
areas as the UCF irrigation system, landscape equipment usage, basic plant care,
landscape hazards and their prevention, and waste and recycling. Groundskeepers
are required to certify by answering questions or performing specific tasks after
attending the course. Pesticide Application Licensing Preparation Program:
This program is a follow-on to the Groundskeeping Certification Program, and
includes all areas to be covered on the county pesticide application licensing
examination. Building Services Certification Program: For Building
Services personnel, this program covers the basics of job-specific skills and
knowledge, including such areas as cleaning techniques for all surfaces and objects,
and specific space requirements, including laboratories. Building Services personnel
are required to certify by answering questions or performing specific tasks after
attending the course. Vehicle Inspection Procedures and Sign-Off: This
self-study program is supplemented with hands-on supervision of actual inspections
by Physical Plant automotive mechanics. This program is required for any Physical
Plant employee who is charged with the weekly inspection of a passenger car or
light truck. Vehicle Backing: This program teaches proper techniques
for safe backing while driving, and is required for all Physical Plant employees. Class
D Driver's License Preparation: This program helps prepare employees to take
the Florida Class D Driver's License test, when required as a part of their positions
at Physical Plant. It covers the Class D specific areas as well as the more general
Class E requirements. Other areas: Under development are additional
programs covering basic storekeeping, basic postal service procedures, basic HVAC
and water treatment procedures, and basic maintenance. Also under development
are Employee-Supervisor Communication Skills, Employee Performance Documentation
and Evaluation, and Conflict of Interest and Outside Activities Policies and Procedures
Review. Special topics classes may also be made available to Physical Plant employees
as resources become available.
