When Human Resources is performing a job audit of a position, it is important to dispel some misconceptions an employee may have about the process. These misconceptions include the following:

Nature of Work versus Work Load

1. An increase in the volume of work performed by an employee is not justification for reclassifying his/her position.

2. Only a significant change in the general nature of work performed by a position is reason for its reclassification. For example, a change from performing exclusively clerical tasks to performing accountancy tasks is cause for the reclassification of a position.

Length of Service

The length of time an employee has served in a position or at the University is not a reclassification criterion.

Performance Evaluation

The job audit process is not a performance evaluation. An excellent rating an employee received on a past performance evaluation is not a reclassification criterion.

Position Location/Supervisor's Position

The location of the employee's position and that of the supervisor is not a reclassification criterion.
