Q. How can I determine what job family my USPS position falls into?
- The three-digit job code falls in a numerical series with occupationally similar classifications. This determines the job family of a position. For example, if your position is a Senior Secretary (job code 118) it falls in the secretarial job family—Secretary (117), Senior Secretary (118), Executive Secretary (119), and Senior Executive Secretary (120).

- Determining one’s position job family (as indicated above) will aid in planning a career path. For USPS positions, an employee may refer to the Staff Class Specification Directory in which they can view various levels of positions within the job family for their current position.

- First determine the range minimum of your USPS position.
- Next determine the range minimum of the position for which you are applying.
- If the range minimum of the position for which you are applying is higher than your current position, it is a promotion.

If a position has changed, the department must submit an Edit Existing Job ePAF. Written justification is required and must be provided in the Comments box of the ePAF. An updated position description must be forwarded to Compensation in Human Resources indicating the corresponding ePAF number.

- A&P compensation is evaluated against local, regional and national market data. Compensation analysis methods are used to determine whether or not an A&P employee is adequately compensated based on comparison between his/her salary and internal and external variables including market data based on the employee’s current job duties.
Q. Does Compensation approve salary requests retroactively?
- Compensation is not able to approve retroactive salary requests.
