Q. What are some ways of providing a pay increase to an employee?
  • An employee may apply for internal promotional opportunities.
  • An employee’s position may be reclassified provided a higher-level classification better fits the responsibilities of the position.
  • An employee may be provided a Special Pay Increase (SPI) provided he or she meets one of the SPI criteria.

Q. How do I calculate a promotion increase?

  • First, obtain the employee's current salary.
  • Next, find the minimum of the new position. Multiply the employee’s current salary by 1.05 (5% increase). The promotional increase is the greater of the two.

Q. How do I find out about my classification and pay?

  • You may contact us at any time to obtain information about your classification and salary.

Q. How can I determine what job family my position falls into?

  • The three-digit job code falls in a numerical series with occupationally similar classifications. This determines the job family of a position. For example, if your position is a Senior Secretary (job code 118) it falls in the secretarial job family—Secretary (117), Senior Secretary (118), Executive Secretary (119), and Senior Executive Secretary (120).

Q. From my position, what is the career path for me?

  • Determining one’s position job family (as indicated above) will aid in planning a career path

Q. How can I determine if a position I apply for is a promotion for me?

  • First determine the range minimum of your USPS position.
  • Next determine the range minimum of the position for which you are applying.
  • If the range minimum of the position for which you are applying is higher than your current position, it is a promotion.

Q. How does one reclassify a position?

  • If a position has changed, update the position description, secure approval from the department head, have a Rate Allocation Form (RAF) prepared and submit both to the appropriate vice president for pre–approval. That office will in turn submit the request to Human Resources.

Q. How do I establish a new position?

  • Complete a position description form, secure approval from the department head, have a Rate Allocation Form (RAF) prepared and submit both to the appropriate vice president for pre–approval. That office will in turn submit the request to Human Resources.

Q. How do I determine if I (or one of my subordinates) am eligible for overtime pay?

  • Overtime eligibility is determined by an employee’s class assignment. The USPS Pay Plan indicates the overtime eligibility status of each classification.

Q. Where can I find instructions on completing the USPS position description?

Q. How do I request a perquisite?

  • A perquisite may be requested for job–related items. To request a perquisite, review the criteria and instructions and then complete the perquisite form.

Q. How are A&P out–of–cycle increases evaluated?

  • A&P compensation is evaluated against local, regional and national salary survey data. Methods (for example, variance analysis) are used to determine whether or not an A&P employee is adequately compensated based on comparison between his/her salary and the salary survey data.
